Hi-ho, hi-ho, it's off to the Pacific Orientation Course we go...
In 5 days, we leave Ukarumpa to head to Madang for our 12 week Pacific Orientation Course. While there, we'll learn more about the Papua New Guinea culture and start our training to learn to effectively speak Tok Pisin, the national trade language. We should be able to continue our posts from there providing we have sufficient time. If we forget to start taking our anti-malarial pills, our next post will likely be from a hospital! Malaria is very likely if you're not taking medication.
No news on a new bridge to replace the Kingston Bridge that collapsed. A steel walk-way bridge was constructed to take the place of the removed old bridge, but the locals won't let it be installed because they're charging money for people to walk across the river on their property. As for the road around the downed bridge which is a 2-1/2 to 3 hour detour from a normal 20 minute drive, last time someone drove it, they ran into 10 tolls set up by people charging drivers before they're allowed to pass. If you have a local with you, you can avoid some of them.
Below is the line for Friday's Burger and Fries night. When you haven't had a burger in a long time, these are well worth the wait.
As you can see, Amelie has been gaining a little weight... or so it would seem!
Here's a leg that Jenny and I saw in clinic today. He's had this swollen lower leg since 1988, I hope we can help improve his condition...
That's all for now, our next blog will likely be from Madang where the air is hot, the humidity is wet, and the learning is incredibly rich!
